At LA CoMotion , I talked to Claudia Wasko, Vice President and General Manager of Bosch eBike Systems Americas. She told me why Bosch is suddenly busy with electric bicycles.

Do you know the story of the seven-league boots? According to this legend, the wearer can travel a full seven miles with just one step. About a decade ago, Bosch engineer Peter Kimmich wanted to make this fairytale for e-bikes a reality.

To achieve this goal, he had to solve the technical problems that e-bikes were struggling to convince Bosch to support the project.

For a long time, electric vehicles looked a little strange and were not necessarily a bestseller. They suffered from overheating problems, short battery life and did not get along well with gradients. Often, something went wrong with the bicycles, which of course neither the buyers nor the dealers enjoyed. Many e-bikes also had the feeling that the engine was in control and not the driver.

Wasko admits she did not buy any of those e-bikes back then. “They were just uncool,” she says. The development of the Bosch e-bike was triggered by a vehicle part, namely the engine of a power steering system. This engine helps drivers to steer by boosting the driver’s power.

Automakers at the time bought fewer servomotors than Bosch had foreseen.
Another bike enthusiast among the Bosch engineers came up with the idea of ​​using the lithium batteries for Bosch’s power tools as an energy source for e-bikes. In the end, the two engineers used Bosch’s giant toolbox to design their e-bike.

The next piece of the puzzle was a torque sensor. In a car, this sensor detects whether the load on one of the seats originates from a person or a shopping bag. This is how the system decides if the safety belt alarm needs to be activated or not. In e-bikes, the sensor is used to detect uphill gradients and provide additional support to the rider. Occasionally stuttering occurred with early e-bikes, but with Bosch’s sensor system you almost feel like you’re on a conventional bike – Bosch calls it “backwind feel”.

When all the parts were finally ready, Bosch was able to take care of the construction of his e-bike. The components could not be easily attached to a conventional bicycle frame. At the same time, Bosch had no experience in the design of bicycles. So it had to be a partner. Wasko therefore went in search of companies that could design concepts for the Bosch bike.

In 2010, Bosch introduced its innovation at the Eurobike bicycle trade fair, with a total of fourteen companies presenting their e-bike prototypes.

The police in LA uses e-bikes!
At LA CoMotion – a mobility mobility conference hosted in Los Angeles – the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) presented its purpose-built e-bike for police use.

Charlie Beck, chief of the LAPD, had first talked to several other bicycle manufacturers before deciding on the Bosch system. The reasons for his choice were the high reliability of the electric bikes and the faultless test drives. Next, he went in search of a partner who could construct an e-bike for police use. Bosch introduced a number of OEM partners to the chief of police, who eventually became Bulls USA favorite. Design and 360-degree spin
Before we kick off the hardware tour, it’s worth noting that the regular Meizu 15 and its bigger sibling, the 15 Plus, are quite alike. The Lite is a bit of a different deal, but despite a price difference of well over $100, choosing between the vanilla and the Plus mostly comes down to your size preference. Unlike the side bezels, the top and bottom chins of the Meizu 15 are of very noticeable thickness. Even so, they’re far from wasting space. It’s not a simple module either, essentially combining biometric security with a solid gesture navigation system for the entire UI. The back of the Meizu 15 might give off the impression of brushed aluminium, but it doesn’t actually feel that way. The surface is pretty smooth to the touch and almost has a slightly plastic feel to it. Now, we’re definitely not saying this with any negative connotation. It feels solid, yet light. Meizu’s particular metal blend does, however, attract an inordinate amount of dirt and is excruciatingly hard to clean without a degreaser. Odd feel aside, the back is solid, with practically no give or flex.

The top of the Meizu 15 is practically empty, only housing the secondary noise-canceling microphone. The main one is on the bottom, along with a 3.5mm audio jack, a loudspeaker, and a USB Type-C port. The latter is only backed up by a USB 2.0 controller, but the speeds are still surprisingly good. USB OTG is also supported.

Moto G6 Plus review

Moto’s G series has always delivered phones with great value for the money and this year‘s Plus models looking to top them all. This is our Moto G6 plus review.

The Moto G6 plus looks and feels quite nice for a mid-range phone, the back is made of Gorilla Glass and it really shines when it catches the light, it does catch a lot of finger prints too. The main attraction on the back side is the round camera bump with its dual cameras and flash underneath it really does look like a surprised emoji. The glass curves into the rounded edges blending a pretty comfortable grip, the edge is made of plastic though so not totally premium and this phone isn’t really waterproof either, though it does have some water repellent coating over the electronics inside.

The fingerprint reader is front mounted and always ready to wake up your phone, you can use the reader for navigation too, swipe right to switch between recent apps, swipe left to go back and tap to go home. On top of that a long press will summon the Google assistant while pressing and holding it for just a second will lock the screen, the two overlaps so it can be a bit tricky at first.

The Moto G6 plus is a 5.9 inch IPS LCD with an 18 by 9 aspect ratio just a hair bigger than the screen on the regular G6. Glass are reasonably deep and the screen is quite bright almost 800 nits with auto brightness mode turned on, you’ll have no problem using this phone out in the sun. There are plenty of color options to choose from in settings, there’s a choice between standard and vivid mode as well as a code temperature slider, we found the warmest setting to produce really accurate colors and instead of a notification LED there’s Moto display, but it only lights up with a new notification comes in or if the phone detects your hands.

For audio there’s a single front firing speakers on the Moto G6 plus located in the bezel above the display, it’s also used as the earpiece for phone calls, speaker output is surprisingly loud and there’s no distortion at max volumes. You also have a lot of control through Dolby audio which lets you choose among sound presets for the phone or tweak your own EQ.

Headphones can be plugged in through a 3.5 millimeter jack at the bottom next to the USB-C port, the sound quality blew us away in our tests and it’s excellent leveling even flagship phones.

The UI of the Moto G6 plus is stock Android 8.0 Oreo with just a few Moto features sprinkled in, these include the fingerprint reader navigation as well as other gestures you can enable in the Moto actions app. You have to rely on Google’s apps for pretty much everything else.

The Moto G6 plus is a Snapdragon 630 chipset a step up from the snapdragon 450 in the regular G6. In benchmarks the G6 plus performs well not spectacular but comparable to other mid rangers with a 625 or 630.

Our model has 4 gigs of ram and 64 gigs of storage, there is a version with 6 + 128 also available and storage is expandable in either case.

The battery is 3200 million powers and battery life is decent, but not outstanding while the chipset is power efficient this phone did draw a lot of power and standby for some reason, in our proprietary battery test at under 70 our endurance rating with the 15 watt turbo power fast charger charging isn’t lightning fast, but is still decent. We got from 0 to 38% and half an hour.

The Moto G6 plus is a 12 megapixel main camera with dual pixel, autofocus but no OIS. The 5 megapixel secondary camera and the setup is only used for depth detection in portrait mode. Manual mode allows you to adjust focus, pick a white balance preset, change shutter speed and ISO and choose exposure compensation.

Unfortunately our review unit arrived with misaligned optics, so corner softness is more pronounced than usual to judge quality we had to go with what’s in the center of the image.

But looking at this daylight images from the Moto G6 + turn out quite alright, with decent detail and nice colors, dynamic range is a bit narrow though and there is some visible noise.

One cool proprietary mode is spot color that lets you capture only a certain color from the spectrum leaving the rest of the photo black and white. Switching to portrait mode allows you to defocus the background behind your subject you can adjust the level blur with a slider, edge detection around faces is pretty accurate.

In low-light shots look pretty good there sharp and detailed with left light colors and low noise. The 8 megapixel selfie cam does a good job too with decent detail and pleasing skin tones, though it doesn’t have autofocus so getting a sharp image is a little more difficult.

The Moto G 6 plus can record 4k video at 30fps, 4k footage is sharp and detailed with no noise, vivid colors and high contrast and sound recording isn’t the best though. At 1080p videos look nice and detailed at 30fps they have stabilization which works alright.

So the Moto G6 plus for around 300 Euros you get a phone with a super bright display, decent chipset, awesome audio quality and a pretty good camera. The only real drawback is that battery life isn’t stellar, but overall there isn’t a lot to complain about here and this phone is easy to recommend.
